(Note: You may have noticed we’ve made a few changes to our website to more prominently highlight our blog posts. I’m reposting this article from January 21st as the first in a series of regular posts about our search for a site and our recent market research study. coop1Our vision of a member owned full-service grocery store offering locally produced food and products in Kitsap County is getting closer to reality.

Over the past several months, the Kitsap Community Food Co-op Board of Directors have been working on the next stages of our development. Last spring, we formed a taskforce to identify properties in the area that were potentially suitable locations for the store. With that list of sites, we commissioned a market research study to give us data about the locations in relation to demographic scans, marketability and sales potential.

The results of the study are in and it gave us very useful information regarding the locations we are looking at. In particular, the information we’ve gained regarding the demographics of the area, the market for a natural food grocery and the specific characteristics of the sites will help us move forward towards meeting the vision of our member-owners.

Since site negotiations have yet to begin, it wouldn’t appropriate to share specific properties at this time. However, the results of the market study lead us to believe that an appropriate location for the store would be in Bremerton, somewhere between East Bremerton and Downtown.

Over the next several weeks, I will be sharing with you more information on this blog about the market research study and the information we’ve gleaned from it. In particular, I’ll share what the study tells us are the site, location, demographic characteristics and sales configurations that will make our store a success.

Also, for member-owners please mark your calendars for the Kitsap Community Food Co-op’s Annual Meeting of Member-Owners, Sunday March 9th, 5:30pm – 7:30pm at the Sheridan Community Center in Bremerton. We will be providing our member-owners an update on the work of the board and introduce our newest board members.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of the board members. We work for you!
