As I discuss the future of the Food Co-op with our friends and neighbors, there is more than a little disbelief that it’s ever going to happen! Thus, many folks are sitting on the proverbial fence waiting to see if it’s true or not.

For example, we hear that there are 3 possible locations being studied in Bremerton. Many think that the Co-op will end up in Silverdale like so many other businesses. Can the leadership discuss openly where the 3 locations are and somehow promote the fact that the location for the retail operation is definitely going to be Bremerton?’

Many thanks, bob and Susan Vukcih (paid members)

Bob & Susan, thank you for being members and for your great question!

We have not looked at Silverdale for locations since very early on, when we realized that the utter density of retail, the traffic, and the cost for commercial space there completely ruled it out as an option. There is already a large density of grocery options in that small community (with more to come at the Trails, when it opens), that we fear our co-op would struggle to survive there.

The board has commissioned two market studies over the last 8 years which look at different parts of Kitsap County and determine whether those areas have the density of households in the strongest demographic of people most likely to shop at a co-op, the accessibility, parking, square footage, and many other qualities, in which to house an enduring and successful co-op. Both studies identified East Bremerton as our strongest option, and downtown as well, with a bit of a modified vision (square footage and proportions of departments). Silverdale was ruled out, Port Orchard was ruled out but retained as an option for a satellite store later, which left Bremerton as our best option.

The co-op has inspired some truly wonderful help from folks in our community who have tons of experience in professional marketing, as well as events planning. With our new website, refreshed printed materials, a better strategy to do outreach and a heavy 2016 calendar bringing more diversity in events than we’ve ever had, we’re really confident in our ability to communicate to the public what we’re doing, and inspire them to volunteer and join!

Please reach out to us at any time at and consider joining us for a board meeting sometime. Thanks again!
